Is pork bad when it smells like barn yard poop?

My boyfriends brother bought him a big pork shoulder in the cryvac bags from zehers. He was going to make sausages out of it. It was in the fridge in the bag for one day and the expiry date is not until jan. 18. When he started cutting it , it had a horrible smell. Kind of like pig shart or chicken poop. We tryed boiling the bone to make a broth and it smelt horrible too. We made a mess of the Kitchen and his brother wasted 20 bucks. We threw it out, better save then sorry. Has anyone else had this happen and should we call zehers?
